History Teaching Masterclass: Every Teacher Can Teach First Nations History [Access Code]

How can we teach First Nations history accurately, respectfully and confidently? That is the premise of this masterclass which will help empower all primary and secondary History teachers to teach First Nations history.

In this HTAV Masterclass, David and Kara will empower teachers to teach First Nations history in their classrooms. By starting out small, with some good resources and contacts, teachers can build a classroom that is inclusive and respectful of Australia’s First Nations history. David and Kara will lead the way, showing the steps and places where teachers can start to build great units and lessons for students.

David Byrnes has been a teacher, working in Aboriginal Education for 27 years across several different sectors including primary, secondary and further education. Born and bred on Latji Latji country with Aboriginal blood lines back to South Australia.

David has presented to various organisations and community groups and loves nothing better than presenting and working with teachers to build confidence to be able to incorporate Koorie perspectives into the curriculum.

Kara Taylor has been teaching History for sixteen years and is a proud Mallee girl. She currently teaches at Irymple Secondary College. Kara’s area of expertise is Australian Aboriginal history and weaving First Nations learning and perspectives into Levels 7–10 Humanities units. Kara has presented at numerous HTAV events and conferences, and provides a range of accessible sources and ideas for teachers to walk away with ready to use. Kara aims to help teachers wherever she can.

Kara and David presented a masterclass on teaching First Nations history in 2022 at the Victorian Academy of Teaching and Leadership. Together David and Kara aim to empower all teachers to teach First Nations history at every year level.
